Projects I've completed

Architecture

Design showcase.

Sage Architectural Alliance needed a website that would present their process and projects to potential clients. They wanted a clean look and the option to sort projects in multiple ways.

I created a grid layout for project categories and built a website powered by WordPress. The homepage has a slider featuring recent work. As part of the effort to keep a clean look, I worked with Sage to craft the homepage text so that it would fit neatly under the slider.

Instrumental Music

Website for music teacher.

Musician Stan Jeffs needed a website for his teaching practice. Keeping students, parents, and band directors all in mind as potential website visitors, I built a site that included optimized text, as well as testimonials from students and other individuals.

Stan's current website is a redesign of a larger site that I made a few years earlier. Stan decided to simplify content and photographic material so that the website presents essential information on a single web page.

Sustainable Agriculture

Website redesign for nonprofit.

Farmer Frog is a nonprofit that started with a food garden at one school and eventually came to support over a dozen school gardens, develop farms on acreage, and establish programs to teach children and adults about urban farming. They had a WordPress site that they were managing themselves but needed a new site that would reflect the organization's growth.

I developed a new homepage, reorganized and updated content, created a new menu and internal link structure, edited photos, made photo galleries, and wrote and edited text to engage website visitors with Farmer Frog's story and mission. Since launch, Farmer Frog has been managing the website on their own and has been adding to the site as the organization has continued to grow.

Construction & Remodeling

Website redesign for small business.

Swanberg Carpentry's old website had a fixed layout and lacked consistent navigation across pages. I proposed building a responsive site and making the text more robust so that it would better anticipate site visitors' questions.

The photos from the old site needed to stay, and my biggest challenge working on the redesign was getting order among these, which were of many different sizes and resolutions. I settled on four templates to display photos that showcased the company's excellent carpentry and then hand-coded this custom website.

Reclaimed Water Research

Technical reports.

I edited eight related reports for a plan to supply reclaimed water for irrigation and other nonpotable uses at three locations in King County, Washington. The reports, which were at various levels of development, had different original authors, including King County engineers as well as external consultants.

In the process of editing, I re-organized existing text, interviewed staff in order to fill information gaps, wrote executive summaries, cross-referenced reports, and brought documents to AP style standards.

Industrial Waste Treatment

User Manual for Pretreatment Information Management System.

As sole writer, I was responsible for all phases of this document for King County's Industrial Waste Program: from proposal and plan through drafting, user testing, and final production.

I analyzed user needs and worked with staff to design the document around specific job tasks, such as monitoring data, determining compliance, and billing customers. The 500-page MS Word manual provides training for new users and reference information for all users.

Dancing & Live Music

Website migration to WordPress.

Northwest Dance Network previously had a static HTML website, but with several events scheduled each month, this nonprofit arts organization needed a website that would be easier to update.

Using a custom WordPress theme that was coded by volunteers at Seattle GiveCamp in 2013, I reorganized, revised, and updated all content; edited and created graphics; improved site architecture and internal link structure; and optimized content for search engines. My efforts were backed by volunteers who checked facts and reviewed and tested the new site. After launch, I provided training on maintaining the new WordPress site. Several volunteers can now share the responsibility of keeping the website current.

Resume

I am committed to working with stakeholders to assess audience needs and ensure that communications support an organization's goals and brand across print and digital forms, including plans, reports, instructions, promotional materials, and website.
